Release of Ontario Long-Term Energy Plan Reaffirms Nuclear Commitment

TORONTO (November 14, 2017) – On October 26th the government of Ontario released its Long-Term Energy Plan which recognizes and supports nuclear power as the central pillar of Ontario’s energy future. The federal government reaffirmed its commitment to the refurbishment of 10 of Ontario’s 18 nuclear reactors including the life extension for Pickering to 2024, and the refurbishment of Unit 2 at the Darlington Generation Station.

“SWI is pleased with the support of the federal government and its commitment to Canada’s nuclear industry,” said Ed Mischkot, VP Consulting Services Energy Engineering at SWI. “Our contributions to the nuclear industry span over three decades, as one of the few technology providers with a unique software engineering perspective based on experience within the Canadian Nuclear industry ranging from simulation and control systems to analytics, data management and cloud computing. We are positive about the future and happy with the government’s focus on a low-carbon energy mix, and the opportunities this will provide for nuclear innovation.”

According to the Canadian Nuclear Association, the nuclear industry in Ontario contributes over $5 billion annually to the national economy and currently supports 50,000 jobs in Ontario. The refurbishment is expected to create over 30,000 jobs for the duration of the project (concluding in 2033). In 2016, the cost of nuclear power averaged 6.9 cents/kWh which is 30% below the provincial average from all sources. Ontario Power Generation expects that even with the $26 Billion investment in refurbishment of Ontario’s nuclear fleet (4 units at Darlington, 6 at Bruce), the average cost of nuclear in 2050 will be 8 cents/kWh (2016 dollars).
